Norwegian research

OLESON, HANSON, NORVOLD

Posted By: Marilyn OLeary (email)

I'm doing some research for a cousin whose maternal line came from Alamakee County. Andrew HANSON and wife Mary HUNSTAD / HUNSTEAD. I believe Mary to be daughter of Ole Oleson who's name becomes Ole O. HANSTED on the 1880 census. Can someone suggest a good site for learning some of the basics regarding Norwegian names? I understand that Oleson means son of Ole - but where do these other names come from then, ie the HANSTED.
Thank you
