In Response To: Lansing Hotel 1800's (alice gensmer)

I don't have any info on the Lansing IA Hartley Hotel. However in searching for info on Sophia Boei (Boey) I found her at age 17 working as a domestic in a hotel in the 1870 census for Lansing Township, IA.

My photocopy of the 1870 census Page 214 is very poor. Sophia seems to be working for the Dreher family. Perhaps the Hartley Hotel was somehow related before or after the Drehers ran it.

If you could get access to a legible 1870 Lansing Township census it may give you a clue. The owners and employes start at Line 21 and end at Line 32 on page 214. My copy of page 214 shows some marks in the location column but are not legible.

Lansing is not a big town so the hotels should be few. The Dreher hotel had 12 people listed in the 1870 census.

Good Luck Alice
