Philip Stone

Philip J. Stone, 60, of Waukon, Iowa, died Sunday, November 13, 2005, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 17, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial of ashes with graveside military rites will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Members of the Waukon Pioneer Fire Company will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Philip James Stone was born May 6, 1945, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Walter J. and Lillian D. (Lane) Stone. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and attended St. Patrick’s High School, where he graduated in 1963.

December 31, 1966, he married Ann Winke at the St. Patrick’s Rectory. Phil worked with his father in the family business, Stone Plumbing and Heating in Waukon. Following his father’s death he owned and operated the business on his own until retiring in 1992. He also served as a cook with the Wisconsin Army National Guard for 18 years.

Phil had a long history of community service. He was Mayor of Waukon from 1996 until 1999 and has served as the City Development Officer from 2000 until the present. He has been a long time member of the Waukon Pioneer Fire Company and was Fire Chief from 1980 until 1989. He was also a member of American Legion and served on the committee that organized Waukon Days for several years. His hobbies included buying antiques, collecting fire trucks and fire extinguishers, driving his 1955 Dodge, and playing euchre with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife Ann of Waukon; three children, Shari (Troy) Lubahn of Waukon, Stacy (Harry Adams) Stone of Elk Mound, Wis., and Steven Stone of Cresco, Iowa, and special friend Michel Goltz; five grandchildren, Alexandria Krohn, Allison Burns, Macie Stone, and Ryan and Logan Lubahn; a brother, Robert (Patricia) Stone of Madison, Wis.; and a sister, Nancy (Jerry) Quinn of Palatine, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
