Clarice Tysland

Clarice M. Tysland, 80, of Waukon, died Saturday, November 19, 2005, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, following complications of ALS. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 22, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Clarice Marie was born August 3, 1925, in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Wayne and Melva Charlotte (Hanson) Todd. She graduated from Waukon High School and attended the University of Iowa. She lived and worked for a year in Idaho and then returned to Waukon where on August 18, 1946, she married Joseph LaVerne Tysland at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She worked for a time for her parents at Todd’s Hatchery. Later, Clarice and Joe began a long career in the restaurant business, operating first the Longbranch Lounge in Frankville and later the Fireplace Lounge in Waukon. For many years she also operated the kitchen at Interstate Producers Livestock Association in Waukon.

Clarice was a long-time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. She was also a member of the Northeast Iowa Quilters Guild, the Allamakee County Historical Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens groups in Waukon and Waterville. Her creative and artistic flair showed itself in the many quilts she made and paintings that she did. She was also an excellent cook and liked to travel, especially to Arizona to visit family. Clarice enjoyed spending time with her many friends, but her favorite times were with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, patiently reading them stories and playing games with them.

Survivors include a daughter, Janell (Rick) Stewart of Tomah, Wis.; three sons, Lonnie (Charlotte) and Regi (Denise), both of Waukon, and Randy of Albuquerque, N. M.; nine grandchildren, Shanon, Eric (Kimbra), Cassie, Tully, Kerry (Brianne), and Tanya Tysland, Tina (Jeff) Francis, Corina (Steve) Turriff, and Montana Stewart; eight great-grandchildren, Brianna, Maren, Tucker, Cody, Tyler, Dakota, Chase, and Tate; a brother, Don Todd of Waukon; and a sister, Wilma Talarico of Honor, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Joe, who died in 1999; and an infant brother, Harry.
