Galen Barth

Galen R. Barth, 64, of Minong, Wis., passed away Sunday, October 16, 2005, at the Mayo Clinic - Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., surrounded by his family. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 20, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Minong with Pastor Craig Nelson and Pastor Chet Hoversten officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery, Minong. Brown Funeral Home of Minong was in charge of arrangements.

Galen Roger was born April 4, 1941, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Floyd and Marcella (Spores) Barth.

Galen was a cattle buyer for Packerland Packing, Green Bay, Wis. He was well-known by cattlemen in the midwest and south central Canada. An avid outdoorsman and bear hunter, he raised prize-winning Plott hunting dogs. Galen had a multitude of friends that enjoyed his quick wit and humor. For him morning coffee and dice shaking at Wendy’s Cafe was a perfect way to start the day.

Galen especially enjoyed long drives up the North Shore with his wife Jean, keeping in contact with friends on the computer, playing “Penny-a-point” Rummy with his family (usually winning), and watching Packer football with Tommy, his cat, on his lap. He was especially proud of the accomplishments of his grandchildren and delighted in their antics and foibles.

Galen was diagnosed with Juvenile diabetes at age 13. He lived each day to the fullest overcoming numerous health problems. After a valiant fight with cancer, and surrounded by his loving family, he passed away peacefully into God’s presence.

Galen is survived by his wife Jean (Nelson, Legg) Barth; his children, Brenda (Ray) Farrell of Kaukana, Wis., Jason (Billie) Barth of Hopkington, Iowa, Charles (Shannon) Vig of Springbrook, Wis., and Chad (Michelle) Barth and his step-daughters Barbara (Matthew) Peterson and Melissa (Lewis) Monnier, all of Minong; 13 grandchildren; his mother, Marcella of New Albin, Iowa; and two sisters, Linda (Ray) Whittle of Cedar Rapids and Roxanne Barth of Madison, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Barth.

Pall bearers were Mike Wagoner, Buck Block, Rod Wilcox, Greg Michael, Tom Telford, and Earl Bostick. Honorary pallbearers were Buzz Scott, Todd Wise, Ron Berg, John Newton, Dave Neumaier, and Robert Larson.
