Helen Clare Pfiffner was born June 5, 1914, in Guttenberg, Iowa, the daughter of Edmund and Clara (Miller) Pfiffner. During her childhood, Helen’s family moved to Lansing, Iowa, where they farmed and she attended grade school. As a young lady, Helen moved back to Guttenberg and was employed at the Central Hotel there.

May 5, 1936, she married Cyril Eglseder and they farmed in the Guttenberg area until his death of Hodgkins Disease in 1943. Helen and her two sons, Robert and Clarence, then returned to Lansing to live.

March 30, 1948, she married Joseph Doubek of Dorchester. They farmed in the Dorchester area until their retirement in 1980. Helen moved to Waukon after Joseph’s death in 1983. For health reasons, she moved to La Crosse in January 1999 where she was a resident of The Willows assisted living facility until December 2000 when she moved to Bethany Riverside Nursing Home.

Helen loved the rigors of farming life, including all the hard work associated with it. She was a great homemaker who enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, and raising chickens. In later years, card club was a source of enjoyment for her. Helen was a very religious lady who felt that when she was not able to do anything else, she could always pray the Rosary.

In addition to her husbands, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Albert and Martin Pfiffner; sister Alice Slindee; and son-in-law Cornelius Hammell.

Survivors include her two sons, Robert (Doris) Eglseder of Waukon and Clarence (Mary Ellen) Eglseder of Omaha, Neb.; her daughter, Margaret Doubek Hammell of La Crosse; five sisters, Rita Asleson of Spring Green, Wis., Theresa (Joe) Grace and Anna Mae (Jack) Adams, both of Dubuque, Iowa, Dorothy Halverson of McGregor, Iowa, and Leona (Bob) Welsh of Caledonia, Minn.; ten grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Casketbearers were her grandchildren, Michael, Kevin, David, and Douglas Eglseder, JoAnne Beiermann, Michelle Coe, Donna Schultz, Diane Hirth, Karen Mathis, and Janel Leiran.
