Walter C. Schuttemeier, 88, of Caledonia, died Sunday, January 30, 2005, at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born March 13, 1916, in Union City township, Allamakee County, Iowa, to William and Caroline (Meyer) Schuttemeier. On May 25, 1943, Walter married Helen Thiele at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen, Minnesota and they celebrated 60 years of marriage in May of 2003. Walter was one of the original founders of Caledonia Haulers. He was a life-long member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen. Walter enjoyed playing cards, rolling dice, and playing cribbage and he dealt the “perfect cribbage hand” this last fall.

Survivors include four daughters, Marion (Ronald) Nerstad of Spring Grove, Loretta (Herman) Willger of Waukon, Iowa, Nanci Collins of Burnsville, and Brenda (James) Westby of Mabel; nine grandchildren; great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; one special sister, Clara Headington of Burr Oak, Iowa; one brother, Fremont Schuttemeier of Eitzen; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Schuttemeier of Spring Grove, and Lucy (Ernie) Schmitz of Cashton, Wis.; one brother-in-law, Walter Beneke of Caledonia; and many nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Helen on January 14, 2004; one sister, Edna; and three brothers, Elmer, Armin and Bill.

Funeral services will be Thursday, February 3, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Eitzen. Rev. Debra A. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia, on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
