Helen Campbell

Helen D. Campbell, 85, of Waukon, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 5 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Helen Dorothy was born February 29, 1920, in New Albin, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Ethel Hope (Sadler) Weymiller. She was baptized and confirmed at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church, attended rural elementary schools, and graduated from New Albin High School before attending beauty school in Waterloo, Iowa. She owned and operated Helen’s Beauty Shop out of her home in Waukon for over 40 years.

January 12, 1941, Helen married John “Bud” Campbell at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dorchester, Iowa. Helen was a life-long resident of Allamakee County and a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary, and VFW Auxiliary where she was a past president. She enjoyed playing cards, golf, and taking rides in the countryside with Bud. Her first priority was always her family, who knew her as a patient, gentle, and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Survivors include her four children, Linda (Marvin) Hoffman and Sharon Campbell, both of Cedar Rapids, Gary Campbell of Mountain Grove, Mo., and John (Jan McDonald) Campbell of Bettendorf, Iowa; six grandchildren, Victoria, Michael, and John Hoffman, Lynn Ties, and Claire and Seth Campbell; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Evelyn Wild of Lansing, Iowa, Lorna Vichlach of Waukon, Hope (Jack) Griffin of Rochester, Minn., and Nancy (Tom) Collins of Hales Corners, Wis.; and four brothers, Leland (Orpha) Weymiller of Spring Grove, Minn., Fred “Fritz” Weymiller of Yuba City, Calif., and Donald Weymiller and Ronald (Lois) Weymiller, both of New Albin, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bud, who died in 1999; an infant daughter, Mary Kay; a son-in-law, Richard Evers; a grandson, Eric Hoffman; and two sisters, Betty Smerud and Shirley Bulman.

Casketbearers were Marvin, Michael, and John Hoffman, Duane Ties, Mike Lefebure, and Seth Campbell.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, by Father Joseph Schneider. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with a Scripture service at 4 p.m. and military services at 4:45 and 5 p.m.
