Dean Sherman, 56, of Marquette, Mich., formerly of Waukon, Iowa, entered the great unknown Wednesday, October 19, 2005, in Traverse City, Mich., after a six-month battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 12 at 1 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Memorials may be directed to the Munson Hospice, 1105 6th St., Traverse City, MI 49684.

Dean William Sherman was born October 6, 1949, in Waukon, the son of William and Leona (Roth) Sherman.

October 14, 1989, in Marquette, Mich., he married the love of his life of 16 years, Hannelore Olson.

Dean graduated from Waukon High School in 1967 and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1972. He continued his studies at the university, earning a certificate of Physical Therapy in 1974. Dean spent his entire career providing physical therapy services to a wide variety of patients. He was especially fond of working with the elderly, as he enjoyed their good humor and sharing their life experiences.

Dean was a 25-year member of the Chocolay Township Lions Club. While he enjoyed a great variety of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, basketball, football, and golf, his greatest love was for his wife Hannelore, his helpmate and soulmate through their 16-year marriage.

He is survived by his wife Hannelore; a sister, Lynn Westberg of Durango, Colo.; a niece, Lara Westberg of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a nephew, Eric Westberg of San Rafeal, Calif.; five step-children, Allen (Laurie) Patrick of Traverse City, Mich., Bob (Christine) Patrick of Belgium, Europe, Laurie (Jim) Terpenning of Port Sanilac, Mich., and Lynn (Kurt) Jepson of Scarborough, Maine; and three grandchildren, Anders, Camden, and Heidi (Brian) Winterble of Keensberg, N. J.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dean was especially fond of a quote from Tom Paine: “My country is the world, my religion is to do good, and all men are my brothers.”
