The people of New Albin were much shocked by the tragedy which occurred at the Batteen home one night last week while Mr. and Mrs. Batteen were attending church at New Albin. The house caught fire and was all ablaze before any of the children, who had been left at home awoke. The eldest boy was the first to waken and he tried to rescue the rest of the children. He had succeded in carrying out his brother who is a helpless invalid and had started back after the other three children when the roof collapsed and all three were burned. Both of the children living were quite badly frozen and are in a serious condition. Mr. and Mrs. Batteen have suffered the loss of all their earthly possessions and what they hold much more dearly their three little children. Mrs.Batten is nearly crazed from grief. Mr. Batteen is a member of the Woodman, who will aid him.
