Patrick Waters, a resident of Allamakee for fifty years and a man of sterling worth who gained and retained the high esteem of all during his years of contact with his fellow men, passed to his reward at his home in this city on Wednesday last, after several months of illness. He was in his 79th year, having been born March 17 in County Cork, Ireland. He came to America in 1853 and after a trip via the Isthmus of Panama to the gold fields of the Pacific slope and British Columbia, he joined acquaintances here in Allamakee county and settled in Union City township on a farm which was his home until his removal to Waukon six years ago. He was married at Lansing in 1863 to Bridget O'Regan who with two of their ten children have preceded him to the grave. The serviving members of the family are three sons and five daughters, namely, James of Montana, Maurice and Thomas of this county, Mrs. Joseph Schwartzhoff of Kellogg, Minn., Mrs. John Howes of French Creek, and Misses Ella, Katie and Winnie at home. All of the children were present at the funeral services which were held at St. Patricks church Saturday morning, requiem high mass being celebrated by Fr. O'Donnell, assisted by neighboring priests. Interment was at Lycurgus, to which place the remains were followed by a large funeral cortege.
