JOHN T. BAXTER

John T. Baxter died Monday, July 18, 2005, at his home in rural Waukon, surrounded by his family, at the age of 73. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 21 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John Thomas Baxter was born December 23, 1931, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Leona (Howes) Baxter. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon, attended the Ells Country School, and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1949.

On June 21, 1950, he married Marjorie Ann Slattery at St. Patrick’s Church. John and Marge farmed together in Union Prairie and Hanover Townships on the farm that has been in the Baxter family since 1875. They raised crops, beef cattle, and hogs and also operated a dairy herd. John served as a Trustee for Union Prairie Township for many years and was also a director for the REC.

Survivors include 11 children and their families, Tom (Beth) Baxter of Waukon and children Betsy, Brian, Carrie, and Kelly; Sue (Sam) Bechen of Dubuque and children Sara and Steph; Tony (Mary) Baxter of Waukon and children Jill, Kevin and wife Bobbi Jo, Melissa, and Brent; Ann (Mitch) Kunkel of Solon and children Stuart, Spencer, Ryan, and James; Mike (Kris) Baxter of Waverly and children Justus and Preston; Katie (Jerry) Weipert of Waukon and children Kim and Joey and wife Dawn and their daughter Novy; Jim (Charlene) Baxter of Waukon and children Jamie and husband Mark, Morgan, and Brody; Jerry Baxter of Waukon and children Reggie, Ross, and Kelsey; Linda (Terry) Fehr of Newton and children Jessica, Jenni, and John; Peg (Tony) Knight of Iowa City and children Devin and Garret; and Barb (Ray) Vitense of Tipton and daughter Aubrey. Also surviving are three sisters, Ruth Rainey of Idaho, Margaret (Ray) Steinhart of Dickeyville, Wis., and Sarah (Bob) Hrdlicka of Charles City; a brother, Bill (Hazel) Baxter of New Albin; and two sisters-in-law, Peg (Don) Lefebure of Fairfax, Iowa, and Dolores (Alberto) Craff of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marjorie, who died in 2003; an infant daughter Nancy; and two sisters, Lorraine Skrypek and Catherine Irons.

John’s daughters served as casketbearers.
