William S. Hart

William S. Hart, 73, of Waukon, Iowa, died Monday, July 11, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, following an eight-year battle with multiple sclerosis. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 14 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

William Sherman Hart was born July 1, 1932, in Waukon, the son of William Sherman and LaVina (Callahan) Hart. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1950. Following high school he studied pre-law at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn.

On June 19, 1954, he married Elizabeth Ryan at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon. Later that year he joined the US Army where he served until 1956, working in various medical services units and seeing 18 months of duty in Okinawa, Japan. After the service he entered the University of Iowa Law School, where he graduated in 1959. He returned to Waukon and began practicing law with his father and uncle, and later his brother. Bill served as Allamakee County Attorney from 1979 until 1993 and retired in 1996 after a legal career of 37 years.

Bill was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. He was active in a number of professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the Iowa Bar Association, and the American Association of Trial Lawyers, and was a charter member of the Iowa Bar Association’s Commission of Lawyers Helping Lawyers until 1996. An avid reader, he took special care to stay current on events around the world and had a particular interest in the history of World War II. Bill enjoyed spending time with his friends and his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth of Waukon; four children, Greg (Kathy) Hart of Sioux City, Iowa, Diane (Larry) Wolfe of Waukon, Christine Hart of Milwaukee, Wis., and Dan Hart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren, Abby Weibel and Elizabeth and Ryan Wolfe; a sister, Suzanne Hart (Thomas) O’Regan of Neenah, Wis.; a brother, Maurice Hart of Waukon; and a brother-in-law, Brother Leo V. Ryan of Arlington Heights, Ill.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Colleen Hart; and a son-in-law, Donald Gavle.

Casketbearers were Ray and Ralph Callahan, Tom and Pat Hart, Gary Rumph, and Ron Osterholm.
