Leland A. "Shorty" Wiemerslage

Leland A. "Shorty" Wiemerslage, 81, of Dorchester, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. Services were held Saturday, January 31, at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Rev. Wayne Lura officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, was in charge of arrangements.

He was born February 11, 1922, at home in Dorchester to Louis and Frieda (Welper) Wiemerslage. On May 27, 1945, he married Evelyn Thompson at the Methodist Church in Dorchester. Leland farmed his entire life in Union City Township. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting with friends and relatives, and playing cards. He loved children, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Leland was a lifelong member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen and had served on the church council.

Leland is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Dorchester; two sons, Larry (Terry) Wiemerslage of West Salem, Wis., and Tom (Judy) Wiemerslage of Dorchester; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Thompson of Caledonia, and Lyla (Kenneth) Thompson of Winona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Sara Wiemerslage; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence (Ruby) Wiemerslage; sisters and brothers-in-law, Irma (George) Dresselhaus, Norma (Fritz) Breeser, and Betty (Robert) Erickson; and also by a brother-in-law, Kenneth Thompson.
