Dorothy Jean Friederich Foels was born March 12, 1922 on a farm near Elgin, Iowa, the third of twelve children. Her parents were Jacob Friederich and Ida (Schneider) Friederich. She grew up on the family farm and attended the Wander School. Dorothy died on January 2, 2004 in the Palmer Memorial Hospital at West Union, IA.

On November 20, 1942, Dorothy married Leo Foels at the Presbyterian parsonage in Postville, Iowa. Leo and Dorothy lived in the states of California and Washington while Leo was in the Army during World War II. When Leo shipped out to the Philippines, Dorothy returned home to help care for her mother, who was ill. Upon Leo's discharge from the Army in 1946, he and Dorothy moved to the Foels family farm northeast of Postville, where they farmed until 1973. In June of that year, they moved into Postville to their residence on North Lawler Street.

Dorothy loved being around people and built many lasting friendships working at the Rima Café and The Grill. She also worked for a number of years as a member of the kitchen staff preparing hot lunches at the Postville Schools. Dorothy was a frequent volunteer at the Good Samaritan Home, and was a loyal visitor to those who were ill and shut in. She was also active in the Postville Senior Citizens group. Dorothy was a 55 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, where she held many offices. Dorothy and her husband, Leo, were loyal attendees at Memorial Day and Veterans Day programs in Postville. She was also a member of Community Presbyterian Church, where she served in many volunteer roles, including deacon, wedding coordinator, funeral coordinator, Sunday School teacher, and almost every position available in the Women's Association.

Dorothy put in countless hours as a quilter, making many fine quilts and comforters for her children, her grandchildren and many others in the Postville community. Dorothy's baking skills were renowned, leaving many desiring for more of her breads and pies.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Ida, her husband, Leo, who died December 23, 2000, a daughter-in-law, Oma, a brother, Alton Friederich, a brother Richard Friederich and his wife, Ila, and a sister, Erma, and her husband, Millard Kamaus, and a sister-in-law, Jean (Schultz) Friederich.
