HOWARD IRVIN HILL

Howard I. Hill, 77, of Waukon, died Friday, January 9, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 13 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with military rites was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, was in charge of arrangements.

Howard Irvin Hill was born May 16, 1926, in Decorah, Iowa, the son of George and Carrie (Bolson) Hill. He was baptized and confirmed at the Pontoppidan Lutheran Church and attended the Pagen School, both in rural Decorah. From 1945 until 1947 he served in the US Army and saw action in Germany and France.

On March 30, 1947, Howard married
Elizabeth "Betty" Knight at the Glenwood Lutheran Church Parsonage in rural Decorah. He worked for a couple of years in the sand mines near Clayton and then farmed in Hanover Township of Allamakee County until 1960.

In 1965 they moved to Monona and Howard worked at Hy-Grade Packing Plant in Postville until 1979. In 1980 they moved back to Waukon and operated the Riverview Restaurant in McGregor and Ma and Pa's Cafe in Lansing until 1984.

Howard has been a resident of Good Samaritan Center since 1999. Howard was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church while living in Monona. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and cooking as well as raising flowers and vegetables. He was also an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Some of his favorite times were spent with his family and he loved being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" of Waukon; five daughters, Joyce (Jerry) Lestina of Frankston, Texas, Jean (Dean) Anfinson of Decorah, Vicki (David) Grindstaff of Istanbul, Turkey, Wendy (Dave) Sanderson of Waukon, and Sondra (Randy) Kruse of McGregor; two sons, Marvin "Butch" (Barbara) Hill of Fairfield, Conn., and Ronald Hill of Monona; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Grace Erickson of Decorah and Bernelle (Dean) Decker of Waukon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Melanie Sanderson; and a brother, Tilman.

Casketbearers were Troy and Russell Lestina, Tim Anfinson, Joseph and Travis Kruse, Mike Sanderson, and Andrew and Cody Hill.

His granddaughters and great-granddaughters were honorary casketbearers.
