EARL ABERNETHY 1890-1956

Funeral services were held Friday, October 12, 1956 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bridget's Catholic Church for Earl Abernethy, long-time Postville resident and popular businessman, who passed away at a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota on Wednesday morning, October 10 following a short illness. The Rev. F. J. Vallaster officiated at the service. Internment was in St. Peter's cemetery at Clermont.

Earl Abernethy, son of Alexander Abernethy and Emma Johnson, was born on February 20, 1890 on the homestead farm south of Postville in Clayton county. He died at a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, Wednesday morning, October 10, 1956, after a short illness.

The family moved to Postville where Mr. Abernethy attended the public high school. He later moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he resided a few years and then moved to Manley, Iowa where he purchased a business. He later moved to Postville where he has since been associated in business.

Mr. Abernethy married Lorretta Sheehy in 1916. To this union three children were born, two of whom survive, a son Curtis, and a daughter, Barbara.

He has been associated with his son, Curtis, in business for the past 12 years under the name of Abernethy Clothiers.

He was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society.

Mr. Abernethy was always active in the business activities and the promotion of his community. He was a member of the Postville Commercial Club and had served as president of the organization. He also served as a member of the town council for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Fred, and a sister, Lulu. Surviving are his wife; one son, Curtis, one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Dickey, of Elkader; and four grandchildren, Michael Abernethy, Timmy, Mary and Margaret Dickey.
