Funeral services for Beth Preuss Leckey were held Sunday, May 29, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa. The Reverend Dave L. Lenth presided, with Father John Moser participating in the service. Ramona Everman was the organist. The Casket Bearers were: Shawn Tessmer, Joe Tessmer, Brad Herman, Matt Herman, Steve Johanningmeier, and Tyler Osborn. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery with Military Honors. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Beth Sue Preuss was born in West Union, Iowa on July 16, 1961 to Harold and Nell (Wille) Preuss. She died unexpectedly on May 22, 2005 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She grew up on the family farm in rural Castalia, surrounded by her loving parents, siblings, and extended family. She graduated from Postville High School in 1979 and the University of Iowa in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Following her college graduation, she worked as a Registered Nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals before becoming a Traveling Nurse, working at a variety of locations throughout the country. In 1986 she enlisted in the United States Air Force, where she remained in active duty, until her death. Her military assignments included four tours of duty in the Middle East.

Beth received her Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Texas, San Antonio, in 1994 and was a certified registered nurse anesthetist, serving as the Ambulatory Surgery Unit Element Chief at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque at the time of her death. Anesthesia was her true love and she was highly respected and regarded by her peers.

She was united in marriage to George Leckey on July 24, 1988 in Castalia. During the ensuing 17 years, they and their two children, Jennifer, 13 and Nicholas, 11 resided in a number of states, including California, Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. She and her family had planned to return to Iowa following her retirement from the Air Force in January 2006 so they could be close to her extended family.

Beth was a warm-hearted, energetic individual who loved her nuclear, extended family, and country unconditionally. She was blessed with numerous friends. She loved to travel, was an avid reader, an excellent cook, and a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Those who had the privilege of knowing her will never forget her. She was a tremendous person and an asset to her country. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband and children; George, Jennifer and Nicholas of Albuquerque; her parents, Harold and Nell Preuss of Castalia and siblings Jeanne (Butch) Tessmer, Elgin, Iowa, Donna (Dan) Hague, Davenport, Iowa, Lynn (Stanley) Staats, Wapello, Iowa, Lee Preuss, Castalia, Iowa, Laurie (James) Herman, Elkport, Iowa, Dennis (Ann) Preuss, Dunkerton, Iowa, Peggy (Daniel) Osborn, Janesville, Iowa, Kathy (William) Wagner, Elgin, Iowa, Sheila (Robert) Burgin, Elgin, Iowa, and Jo (Darren) Larson, McGregor, Iowa. Her step-son, Joshua Leckey, step-granddaughter, Ashley Leckey, 19 nieces and nephews, one great niece, 3 great nephews, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive her. Her grandparents, Edward and Florence Preuss and Joseph and Theresa Wille, her maternal aunt, Sister Josanne Wille, and several cousins preceded her in death.
