Mrs. JAMES V. (Elizabeth French) EWING 1819-1905

Mrs. J. V. Ewing died Thursday, November 30th, at her home in Franklin township after a year's illness of dropsy. Elizabeth French was born December 1, 1819, at Shippen's Port, Ky. She was married at Rome, Ind., to James V. Ewing, who died in 1883. After their marriage they made their home at Cannelton, Ind., until about fifty-three years ago when they came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Franklin township, which has been her home until death came.

She was not a member of any church but her sympathy was with the Presbyterian denomination. She was a devout Christian loved by her friends and neighbors to all of whom she was known as Grandma Ewing.

Twelve children were born of this union, five of whom died in infancy and one, Scott A., died about three years ago, at Wellston, Okla. The surviving children who are left to mourn a kind and loving mother are: Daniel W. of Florence, Ariz., Mrs. Rosa A. Fisher, of Wellston, Okla., Mrs. Elizabeth Chambers, of North Platte, Neb., Jacob of Franklin township, Mrs. Adaline Douglass of this city, and Mrs. Lodema Dravis [Davis] of Franklin township, also a half-sister, Mrs. Nancy Long of Jeffersonville, Ind.

Funeral services were held at the home in Franklin township, Sunday, December 3rd, conducted by Rev. Robinson, of Postville, assisted by the Bethel choir and the remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery near Myron.

Note: Elizabeth (French) Ewing died November 30, 1905. Burial in the Myron Cemetery. On her head stone is this verse: "Thou hath left us and thy loss we deeply feel, but it was God, that hath bereft us. He can all our sorrows heal." The Smith Cemetery used to be often called the Myron Cemetery.
