ORIN M. FRANKLIN 1862-1897

Orin M. Franklin was born in Illinois, Feb. 17th, 1862, and died March 13th, 1897, aged 35 years and 24 days. He came with his parents to Franklin twp., Allamakee Co., Iowa, in 1864. Soon after this his father went to the civil war and died, leaving his mother with four small children, Orin being the youngest, only four years old. He received a good common school education at the soldier's home at Cedar Falls, Iowa. He went to the home at four years and stayed until fifteen years old.

December 15, 1885, married Carrie S. Cook. To them were born four children, two boys and two girls; they and their mother, one brother and two sisters are left to mourn his loss. This leaves Mrs. Franklin as his mother was left when he was young, a widow with four small children to care for.

Mr. Franklin was above the average in intellect, and a ready speaker for his practice, a man trying to love and serve his master. He was converted in 1892 and joined the Free Methodist church in May, 1892, and was licensed to preach by the same denomination. A large number of friends and neighbors came to the funeral to pay their last respects. We believe through the mercy of our father he will be saved.

Submitter Notes: Orin was born in Woodward Co. Illinois, a son of Gideon and Adaline (Thomas) Franklin. Adaline later became Reuben Smith's second wife. The surviving brother was Orie Douglas Franklin and the two sisters were Wealthy Franklin and Mrs. Stephen F. (Patience Franklin) Goodrich. Orin's children were Benjamin, born 1890; Ernest, born 1892; daughter un-named, and Dora Delilah Franklin, born February 25, 1887; she married Eugene Chase.
----------------------------

O. M. Franklin died at his home about four miles northeast of Postville last Saturday, of pneumonia, aged about 35 years. Mr. Franklin was an industrious citizen, though unfortunate so far as success in this life was concerned, having lost all in a venture against Dakota drouths (sic) and hot winds a year or two ago. "Curn", as he was familiarly known in these parts, was a man with character untarnished, upright, truthful, and tender, his death is regretted by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn the death of a loving husband and father. The funeral services occurred Tuesday forenoon, Rev. Harper officating (sic).
