Mrs. SIMON (Wilhelmine Caroline Goeke) GROTEGUT 1836-1907
On Thursday of last week [December 19, 1907] occurred the death of Mrs. Wilhelmine Grotegut, after an illness covering a period of about four weeks, aged 71 years, 3 months 27 days.
Miss Goecke, was born in Hohenhausen, Lippe Det Wold, Germany on August 22, 1836, and here she was reared and brought up in the faith of the Reformed church. She left her native country in 1854 and on coming to America first settled in Wisconsin, and here in 1855 she was married to Mr. Simon Grotegut and with him experienced the joys and sorrows of the early pioneer life.
Later they came to Iowa settling on a farm west of Waukon and made this their home until fourteen years ago when they moved to Waukon to make their future home.
To this couple twelve children were born, nine daughters and three sons, and to these children the deceased was a most devoted mother. The husband died in 1899 and since then death has entered the families of the children at different times, until her soul seemed so weighted with sorrow that she desired to depart from this world, and find rest in the heavenly home.
She leaves three sons, Fred, Simon, and Henry and eight daughters, Mrs. Biebermeier* of Wisconsin, Mrs. Henry [Sophia] Hager, Mrs. Fred [Henrietta] Becker, Mrs. Fred [Amelia] Bechtel, Mrs. Wm. [Lena] Snitker, Mrs. Dan [Clara] Snitker and Misses Anna and Lydia of Waukon, one brother Fred Goecke of Wisconsin and a large circle of relatives and friends mourn her loss.
The funeral services were held Monday at the German Reformed church conducted by her pastor Rev. G. D. Elliker.
