Funeral services for Dr. Lena Hecker, who passed away at La Porte City on August 24, were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on August 27, (1961).

Dr. Hecker was born as Lena Mary Bedenbender to John Henry and Mary Anne M. Bedenbender on November 11, 1877. She graduated from the La Porte City high school as valedictorian in 1897, taught in the rural schools for two years, then entered the Iowa State Normal School where she received her B. A. degree. In 1919 she entered the Iowa State University and completed her Master of Arts degree in 1920 and taught as high school principal at Greene.

Mrs. Hecker and her husband John, farmed near Postville until his death in 1928. She then taught for six years and enrolled in Iowa State University and received her PHD degree in 1935. As Dr. Hecker, she accepted a position in the Audubon high school where she remained five years.

Interment was in the Postville cemetery.
