Mrs. EDWARD (Clara Louise Winke) KUGEL 1897-1997

Clara L. Kugel, 100, of Waukon, died Tuesday, December 23, 1997 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 27, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, IA with Rev. Linda Baldwin officiating. Burial was at Zalmona Cemetery, rural Waukon.

Clara Louise Kugel was born September 28, 1897 on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon, farm of her parents, William and Lydia (Meier) Winke. She was baptized and confirmed at the Zalmona Presbyterian Church and attended Ludlow #2 rural school.

On September 27, 1923 she married Edward Kugel at her parents home. Clara and Edward farmed in Jefferson and Ludlow Townships until his death in 1936. In 1940 Clara moved to Waukon where she did housekeeping and babysitting for many area residents. In 1994 she moved to South Ridge Senior Village in Waukon and the past year she has lived with her daughter Jean at her rural Postville home.

Clara was a life-long member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church and active in Ladies Aid and Sarah Circle. She was also a volunteer at Makee Manor for 10 years. Carla enjoyed crocheting and gardening and was an excellent scrabble player. She stayed very active and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edward; her son Arlyn; her great-grandson Adam Berg; her 3 brothers Elmer and George, and wife Martha Winke, and Emmet Winke and her son-in-law Merlin Snitker.

Survivors include her two daughters, Jean Snitker of Postville, and Verla and husband, James Cade, of Phoenix, AZ; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; her sister Dorothy Ludeking and her brother Walter, and wife Helen, Winke both of Waukon; daughter-in-law Sandra Kugel of Iowa City; and sisters-in-law, Mabel Winke and Clara Winke, both of Waukon.

Casketbearers were Larry Snitker, Randy Snitker, Glen Snitker, Jon Kugel, Jim Winke and Alfred Bervene Ludeking.
