Mrs. CHRISTIAN F. (Claudia Hinsch) MEIER

Funeral services for Mrs. Claudia Meier were held in the Community Presbyterian Church Tuesday, March 16, 1971, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dick Harberts officiating. Mrs. Meier died March 13, 1971 at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville.

Claudia Hinsch Meier, daughter of Charles and Amelia Hinsch, was born September 28, 1878, at Farmersburg, Iowa. Her early life was spent in Farmersburg and she attended high school at Garnavillo, returning to Farmersburg to assist her father in his hardware store.

On October 20, 1897 she was married to Christian F. Meier of Farmersburg. Two children were born to this union, Marguerite and Gertrude (Mrs. William G. Moore). Marguerite died at 3 1/2 years of age.

Mrs. Meier and her husband, who was county treasurer, lived in Elkader until 1913 when they moved to Ismay, Montana and lived on a ranch. Later they moved to Miles City where Mr. Meier was auditor in a lumber business and Claudia worked in a department store for 12 years. They later purchased a grocery store which they operated for ten years. Following her husband's death, she sold the store and returned to St. Olaf, Iowa, where she assisted her sister in caring for her aging mother.

She then moved to Los Angeles, California to live near her daughter Gertrude and worked in Bellmont. After the death of her daughter she continued to live near her son-in-law and two children, returning to Postville in 1950 to make her home with her sister-in-law, Irene Meier.

As an infant, Claudia was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo. In Miles City, Montana, she became a member of the Christian church and while living in Postville was an active member of the Presbyterian church.

Claudia was a life member of the Eastern Star, a member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge at Farmersburg and a member of the Postville Monday Club.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. O. M. Grissinger (Adele) of Lake Havasu City, Arizona and Mrs. Peter Hemrick (Alma) of Yucaipa, California; two grandchildren, Marguerite (Mrs. Don Stetson) of Fairbank, Alaska and William of Los Angeles, California; two great grandchildren, Samantha and Michael Stetson.

Three brothers preceded her in death, Henry, Arthur and Charles and two sisters, one in infancy and Mrs. Arthur Mohrman of Monona.

Interment was in the Farmersburg Cemetery.
