Carl Miller, 86, a resident of this community for the past 55 years, passed away suddenly last Friday afternoon. He had come down town as was his custom and stopped in to chat with friends at the Schutte furniture store when he passed away while seated in a chair.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Schutte Funeral Home and at St. Paul's Lutheran church, the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiating at the services. Interment was in Postville cemetery.

As Frederick Carl John Miller, he was born the son of John Carl Frederick Miller and Dorothea Caroline Roehl Miller, February 1, 1857, in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, and received his schooling in that country. He was married to Louise Michael of Strelitz, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, on September 20, 1881, and with their family the couple came to the United States in 1888, settling at once in this community and this has been their home since.

After farming for many years on two farms in the Postville community, the family in 1918 moved to Postville and Mr. Miller had resided here since. Mrs. Miller passed away on October 20, 1928, and during the intervening years Mr. Miller had lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Wilke and family.

Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Miller of whom the following nine survive: Henry and August of Postville; Edith (Mrs. Frank Bellows) of Dubuque; William of Waukon; Bertha (Mrs. John Gregg) of Postville; Gusta (Mrs. Howard Wykoff) of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Amanda (Mrs. C. F. Smith) of Waterloo; Anna (Mrs. Wilbert Wilke) of Postville, and Louis Miller of Rockford, Ill. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Four children preceded their father in death.
