Mary Hope Sawyer

The valedictorian of the 1935 class of Postville High School died May 29, 1985 in Ann Arbor, MI. The woman, Mary Hope Humphrey Sawyer, also received the Harriet Mott Award that year. A resident of Ann Arbor since 1947, she had planned to attend her 50th graduation reunion here Saturday.

She was born Oct. 28, 1917 in Monona, one of 4 children of James T. Humphrey and Grace Cool Humphrey, who later moved to Postville. After graduation from Postville High School, she majored in speech at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1939. She received her masters of arts in speech from the University of Michigan in 1946. She then moved to Clinton, where she taught in high school. In 1947 she married Thomas M. Sawyer, originally from Hillsdale, MI and lived in Ann Arbor with him.

In 1963-1964 she, her husband, and her four children lived in Lahore, Pakistan, where she taught English and Speech in the Lahore American School. In 1976 she and her husband visited their son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Mary Engel Sawyer III, in Leuven, Belgium, where they were teaching. And in 1983 she accompanied her husband on a trip to Pretoria, South Africa.

She was a member of Delta Delta Delta, the University of Michigan Faculty Women's Club, the Ann Arbor Women's City Club, and the American Contract Bridge League.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret, her brother, Howard, and her son, Thomas M. Sawyer III.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Sawyer, her brother, Donald Humphrey of Kingston, Ohio; her daughters and sons-in-law, Sally Wind Sawyer and Dr. Peter Scrivani and granddaughters, Christina and Julia of Carmel Valley, CA; and Susan Cool Sawyer and Lindsey Miller and granddaughter Taylor of Stamford, CN; her daughter-in-law, Mary Engel Sawyer and grandsons Samuel, Michael, and Steven of Havre, MT; and her son and daughter-in-law Charles and Carla Smith of Minneapolis, MN.

No services will take place. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
