Rites Are Held For Albert Schlitter

Funeral services for Albert A. Schlitter, 87, were held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren church, Monona, with Rev. Clifton W. Ellerbeck officiating.

The body lay in state at the church from 12:00 o'clock noon until the time of the services. Burial was in the Monona City cemetery.

Mr. Schlitter died Friday afternoon, December 22, 1961 at 2:30 o'clock shortly after being admitted to the Veterans' Memorial hospital at Waukon after a lingering heart ailment. He had been staying at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grover (Hazel) Timmerman in Waukon.

He was born a son of Adolph and Caroline, nee Ziesow, Schlitter, July 25, 1874, in a log cabin in Linton township, Allamakee county. He was educated in the Figgie school and later attended the Nora Springs Normal school. After school and before his marriage, he worked as a clerk in Fett's store at Watson.

He was married to Elizabeth L. Schmidt, October 8, 1902 at Watson by Rev. Sherman. The couple purchased a farm north of Watson in Linton township, where they spent the remainder of their lives in farming.

When his wife died, August 13, 1939, he retired but continued to live on the home farm with his son, Carlton and family.

He served for 40 years as a trustee of the Sixteen cemetery and was one of the first directors of the Union Farmers creamery at Monona and Luana-Monona Farmers Telephone company. He also served for 60 years on the election board of Linton township.

He was a life-time member of the Evangelical United Brethren church first at Watson and later in Monona.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three children, two in infancy, and Leslie in 1959, three sisters, Mrs. Martin (Minnie) Franck, Mrs. Charles (Mathilda) Topel, and Mrs. Fred (Emma) Fett; four brothers, Theodore, John, Will and Herman; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Grover (Hazel) Timmerman of Waukon and Mrs. Gerwin (Mabel) Martins, Postville; three sons, Milton of Waterloo, Willis of Waukon, and Carlton on the home farm, one brother, Emil of Monona; 19 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
