Ben Shafer Passes After Long Illness; Funeral on Tuesday

Benjamin A. Shafer, 54, a lifelong resident of this community, passed away Sunday afternoon at his home in this city after a lingering illness. A native of Ludlow township, he had made his home in this city for the past 2½ years. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Schutte funeral home, conducted by the Rev. G. E. Reibert, pastor of Bethlehem church in Ludlow, and interment was in Postville cemetery.

Benjamin Albert Shafer was born in Ludlow township October 16, 1892, as the son of Ernest and Bertha Klocke Shafer. He attended the school in his home district and was married to Miss Clara Marie Kostman August 13, 1913. Mrs. Shafer passed away February 12, 1944.

Surviving Mr. Shafer are four daughters, Mrs. Walter Schutte (Esther) of Castalia, Mrs. Lloyd Block (Minnie) and Mrs. James Hangartner (Bernice) of Postville, and Velma Shafer of Flint, Mich., also two sons, Raymond and Albert Shafer of Ludlow township; five grandchildren; three brothers, Paul, Ed and Carl Shafer and two sisters, Mrs. August Held and Mrs. Paul Fiet, all of Ludlow township.
