Rites Held For Samuel Waters

Samuel Waters, son of Samuel and Catherine (Lyons) Waters, was born June 27, 1873, Ludlow township. He died Monday, November 12, 1956 at Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 83 years.

In the acquirement of his education Samuel Waters attended district school for three years in Ludlow township and subsequently the district schools of Clayton county. He remained at home until about 20 years of age, when he hired out as a farm hand in Frankville, Winneshiek county, for one year. He then rented land in Ludlow township, successfully cultivating it for two years.

On March 13, 1895, Mr. Waters was married to Clarice Jane Hughes at Frankville. To this union one daughter Clara Catherine was born. They moved to Emmett county, Iowa, where they farmed for ten years. In 1906 they returned to Ludlow township in order to assist, for two years, in the work on the old homestead. Mr. Waters then bought 120 acres of land which he brought to a high state of productivity and erected a modern and comfortable residence and substantial farm buildings.

Mrs. Waters passed away on March 7, 1926. Shortly thereafter Samuel Waters moved to Tama.

On January 19, 1927 Samuel Waters was married to Elizabeth Gould of Tama. In 1928 they moved to Council Bluffs where Mr. Waters worked as carpenter and mason.

Mr. Waters is survived by his wife, one daughter Mrs. Thomas Vickery of Postville; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Lowe, Santa Barbara, California, Mrs. Susan Marston, Earlham, Iowa; Mrs. Jennie McKinley, Iowa City, Iowa, Mrs. J. A. Peck, Decorah, Iowa; three brothers, Chris and Wallace Waters, Decorah, and Calvin Waters of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, one great granddaughter, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Waters was a member of the Union Mission Church of Council Bluffs.

Funeral services were held at the Frankville Presbyterian Church, Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. A. G. Showalter in charge and the Rev. W. T. Martin assisting in the rites. Burial was in Frankville.
