Jessye Alma Schroeder

Jessye Alma Schroeder, daughter of Halvor and Andrine Johnson (Halvorson) (sic) was born March 5, 1896 at Clermont, Iowa. She died Sunday, April 24, 1994 at the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She was 98.

She was baptized in the East Clermont Lutheran Church, rural Postville, and was confirmed there by Rev. J. Theodore Bursett on Oct. 23, 1910. Jessye spent her early years on a farm near Clermont, and attended the Clermont School.

On March 5, 1920, she was married to Edward F. Schroeder at Cedar Rapids, Iowa by the Rev. Illwig. To this union, four sons were born. The family lived in Postville, where they owned and operated first the Schroeder-Schultz Grocery Store and Schroeder's Grocery Store. The family was in the grocery business from 1920 to 1962. Jessye helped with the operation of the store. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in 1981.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, and of the Women of the ELCA. She had served as president of the women's association and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ed, who died April 28, 1949; and a son, the Rev. Duane Schroeder. Surviving are three sons, Stanley Schroeder and his wife Marjorie of Postville, Lyle Schroeder and his wife Elizabeth of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Gerald Schroeder of Madeira Beach, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Duane (Lois) Schroeder of Monona; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 26, 1994 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, the Rev. Charles W. Miller officiating. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were Travis Blair, Lucas Blair, Harold Halverson, David Schroeder, Joshua Blair, and Harris Kjosa.
