Rev. Duane E. Schroeder
POSTVILLE, Iowa -- The Rev. Duane E. Schroeder, 66, of Postville died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1989, at Good Samaritan Center, Postville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. Burial will be in the Postville Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville.
Rev. Schroeder formerly served at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville for several years as a visitation pastor.
He was born on March 9, 1923, in Postville, son of Edward and Jessye (Halvorson) Schroeder. He married Lois Diedrich on July 21, 1945, in Racine, Wis.; she survives.
He had served in various parishes in the midwest, including Mason City and Davenport. He was a chaplain during the Korean War.
Also surviving are a son, David Schroeder of Davenport; two daughters, Mrs. Kiego (Kathleen) Franzoni of Carol Stream, Ill., and Mrs. Fred (Janet) Chavonec of Racine; a granddaughter; his mother of Postville; and three brothers, Stanley Schroeder of Postville, Lyle Schroeder of Sacramento, Calif., and Gerald Schroeder of Madiera Beach, Fla.

Rev. Duane E. Schroeder was baptized June 2, 1923 and confirmed on March 21, 1937 at the St.Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. Duane graduated from Carthage College in Illinois in 1943 and from the Chicago Lutheran Seminary in 1946. He was ordained July 26, 1946 at St.Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.On July 21, 1945 he married Lois Diedrich at the Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Racine, WI. They had three children.
Rev. Schroeder became the assistant pastor at First Lutheran Church in Decatur, IL for two years, where he also continued his voice training at Milliken University. He sang opera and appeared as soloist with the 100 member Civic Orchestra. His next parish was St.Mark's Lutheran Church in Indianapolis, He entered the Air Force as a Chaplain during the Korean War, serving 5 years. The major part of his tour of duty was at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and the Headquarters for the Northeast Air Command at St.John's, Newfoundland, including Greenland, Iceland, and Labrador. He was known as the singing Chaplain, having been sent out to perform "Ballad For Americans." He was discharged with the rank of Captain.
Returning to the parish ministry, Rev. Schroeder served at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, IN, St.Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa and St, Matthew Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa. He became visitation pastor in St.Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Rev. Schroeder held several offices at the Synod level of the Lutheran Church and was very active in the YMCA.
Rev. Schroeder was preceded in death by his father, Edward, who died in 1948.
