Death of Old Settler
Mrs. Charles Jones passed to her eternal reward at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Ewing, Sept. 9, 1927, aged 91 years, 4 months and 5 days. Elizabeth Miranda Lane was born in Woodstock, Ulster County, New York, May 4, 1836. She came with her parents, Caleb and Sarah Lane, to Allamakee County, Iowa, in the spring of 1854, when this county was thinly settled, the family having to pass through many of the trials incident to early settlers. Here she grew to womanhood’s estate and spent most of her long life. Her education and common sense fitted her for the task of training her children in life.

She was united in marriage with Charles Jones at Decorah, Iowa, Nov. 15, 1855. To them 13 children were born, three of their sons having passed to the other world. Ten are left to mourn the loss of a very worthy and dear mother: Mrs. Mary J. Shining of Waterloo, Iowa; Martha A. Clark living near the Old Stone House; Willis N., near Lansing; Mrs. Francis T. Miller, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Minnie Ewing, near Waukon, Iowa; Arthur and Lewis of Franklin township, this county; Mrs. Mabel DeWitt of Waukon; Mrs. Grace Teeters, of Chicago, Ill.; and Mrs. Adelia V. Russell, of Lansing, Iowa.

Besides these she leaves 30 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Mr. Jones died nearly 30 years ago and Mrs. Jones was left to finish the work of preparing the children for life’s work. For a long rime she has been nearly helpless but has had the kind and loving care of her children, especially of Mrs. Ewing with whom she resided.

In 1869 she united with the Methodist church of Waukon, but distance of residence from Waukon, and her many duties to her children, and then failing health have kept her from attendance at her church. But she has always been a true Christian, doing what she could to help others and to serve her Savior.. Finally she fell peacefully asleep.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Van Nice at the Rossville church Monday and burial beside her husband in Makee cemetery.
