ELDEST SON OF MR.& MRS. J.P. ELLIS OF THIS CITY PASSES FRIDAY EVENING

The people of this community were shocked and sorrowed on Saturday morning when the news passed around that Lyle Ellis was dead, having died about 10:00 the evening previous at the home of his parents, Mr.and Mrs. J.P. Ellis in this city. The Saturday preceding his death Lyle was suddenly stricken with an acute attack of appendicitis and although medical skill and tenderest care were promptly and persistently applied they could not stay the hand of the Grim Messenger.

Lyle was born in Postville, May 5, 1901 and died October 16, 1914 aged 13 years, 5 months, and 11 days. He was a bright, upright, manly boy; always courteous and good natured and ever ready to do a favor for whoever might ask it; Industrious and trustworthy to a marked degree. He was a studious and obedient boy at school and highly esteemed by his classmates and teachers. He also was a regular attendant of the Methodist Sunday School. In short he was a splendid good boy who was building a broad and deep foundation for manhood of the highest type. All who knew him and they are many, mourn his untimely passing and sincerely sympathize with the grief stricken family in their great sorrow which only time can alleviate or assuage. In the home he was kind, considerate and dutiful, ever thoughtful of his parents, his little brothers and sisters and his aged grandmother. And here, where but a few short days ago were smiles and sunshine, we find the family circle bowed down with a grief almost too great for human hearts to bear. The tenderest sympathies of all are with you, but by no word or token can earthly friends soften the poignant pangs of your sorrow, we can only commend you to that Great Comforter, the King of Kings, the Prince of Peace.

The funeral was held from the Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 2:00. Rev. W.W. Mellott officiating and was largely attended. The floral offerings were by far the most profuse and beautiful ever seen in Postville on an occasion of this kind. A most impressive and touching feature of the funeral cortege was an escort of twenty four boys from the Public Schools in charge of Lyle's teacher, Miss Woodward and Supt. Hilliard who marched just ahead of the casket and carried the floral offerings. At the church they were joined by Lyle's Sunday School class and teacher, Mrs. Franklin, Miss Little of the Sixth Grade of the Public School, Lyle's teacher last year was also present. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
