On Monday forenoon, April 5, 1926, Mrs. Jonathan P. Ellis, one of Postville's pioneer mothers, passed away at the home of her son, J.P. Ellis, her demise following an illness of little more than a week's duration. For more than a half century she has been a resident of this city and locality and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances all of whom will learn of her passing with sorrow and sincerely sympathize with those bereft. She was a good wife and mother, neighbor and friend, and her death removes from our midst, one of the oldest residents of this vicinity.
Lydia Angeline Dow was born on September 20 1840 at Meredith, New Hampshire, where she lived until she reached the age of 12 years when her father passed on and she moved with the immediate family to Center Harbor, New Hampshire. At this place she was employed in a cloth factory until she reached the age of 22 years. In 1862 she was united in marriage to Daniel Kelley and to this union were born two daughters, Flavia Euphina Hawkins residing in Postville and Delia Bertram Standorf of Hopkins, Minnesota.
Together with her mother and two daughters, she moved to Postville, Iowa in March of 1873. On August 10, 1874 she was united in marriage to Jonathan Ellis and they moved to the old homestead north of Postville where they resided until November of 1886. To this union were born a daughter, Gertrude R. Krambeer of Rudd, Iowa and a son, John Pearl Ellis of this city. Since the passing of her husband the deceased has made her home with her son J.P. Ellis and family in this city.
Besides the four children, she is survived by sixteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. At the time of her passing on April 5, 1926 she was aged 85 years, 6 months and 15 days. The funeral was held from the home at 2:00 conducted by Rev. E.T. Finck. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
