Harlan "Herk" Herman

Harlan “Herk” Herman, 76, of Waukon died Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, October 4 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Jim Dubert officiating. Burial with military honors was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home assisted the family.
Harlan "Herk" Raymond Herman was born August 26, 1937 on his parents' farm in Makee Township in rural Waukon. He was the son of Otto Roland and Alma (Sivesind) Herman. Herk was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, attended Hanson country school in Makee Township, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1955. Herk served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1959.

November 19, 1960, he married Carol Hammel at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. They had seven children together and later divorced. Herk worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation from 1968 until he retired in 1997. He also hauled milk for Gary Bulman for several years and had several other jobs. In 1973, Herk started Herk's Lawn and Garden Service.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Waukon Pioneer Fire Company and the American Legion. Herk enjoyed his lawn care business, fishing, working crossword puzzles, collecting die cast cars, telling stories, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and a proud share holder.

Survivors include his children, Sandy (Al) Halverson, Ron (Susanne) Herman and Rick (Cathy) Herman, all of Waukon, Kevin (Renee) Herman of Sparta, WI, Jodi (Dave Duffy) Herman of Decorah, Mark (Denise) Herman of Stewartville, MN, and Jason (Katie) Herman of La Crosse, WI; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marilyn (Vernon) Geuder of Jacksonville, FL, Lorraine (James) Bergquist of Bloomington, MN, and Norma Jeanne (Donald) Brown of Ballwin, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ronald and Eugene Herman.

Honorary casketbearers were Gus Berger, Keith Burrett, Daryl Cooper, Gene Sweeney, Tom Hart, Dave Mathis, Waukon Pioneer Fire Department, and Iowa Department of Transportation.

Casketbearers were Denver, Tyler, Mitchell and Kelsey Halverson, and Jonathan, Jared, Dylan, Ryan, Cody, Bailey, Brody, Sydney, Samantha, Mackenzie, Ariaya, Daylan and Hudson Herman.
