Margaret Regan
Margaret Stella Regan, 89, of Waukon passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013 at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, September 21 at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, Waukon, with Father Jim Dubert and Deacon Mike Ward officiating.
Casketbearers were Ken Hennings, Scott Van Gorp, Bill Van Gorp, Greg Ward, Gary Ward and Bob Ward. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Hanson Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
Margaret was born June 5, 1924 in Waukon, the daughter of George and Gertrude (Riley) Ward. She was baptized and confirmed at Saint Mary's Church, Lycurgus. Margaret attended French Creek #5 rural school through eighth grade and graduated from Waukon High School in 1941. She continued her education attending Waukon Junior College for one year.
March 8, 1943, Margaret married John F. Regan at Saint Mary's Church, Lycurgus. Since this was war-time, they moved to Waterloo, where John worked for the Defense Department and Margaret worked for the WCF&N Railroad. Returning to Waukon in 1950, Margaret went to work for Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator until the dial system was implemented. She is best remembered as a bookkeeper for Peoples Natural Gas where she worked until her retirement. After a two-year hiatus, and not being content to stay home, Margaret went to work for Jack and Bonnie at Sweeney Real Estate.
When not at work, Margaret spent time cooking, especially trying new recipes for family gatherings and cake decorating. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, keeping up with current events and Friday lunch with friends.
She was an active member of Saint Patrick's Church, serving on the Women's Board and the Bingo Board. She was a member of the Little Flower Study Club.
Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Susan (Ken) Hennings of Decorah and Nina Van Gorp of Waukon. She was a grandma to Liz (Joel) Courtney, Scott (Heather) Van Gorp, Bridget (Rick) Ronan, Kristine Hennings and Bill (Brandi) Van Gorp. She was a great grandma to Eli, John, Matt, Jacob, Hayden, Emily, Joey, Stella, Anja and Jackson. Also surviving is her brother, Jim (Elaine) Ward of Waukon, and several nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and one great-granddaughter, Regan Margaret Ronan.
