Funeral services for John Benjamin Schlitter, age 74, were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 from the Schultz Funeral Home to Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren Church at 2:00 with Rev. A.W. Elert officiating. Burial was in the city cemetery. Mr. Schlitter died at the McGregor hospital Saturday night December 31, 1955 at 6:30 o'clock from a heart attack he suffered earlier in the afternoon at the home of one of his daughters, Mrs. Paul Strelow, where he had been visiting. He had been afflicted with a heart ailment for some months.

John Benjamin Schlitter was born January 30, 1881, son of Adolph and Caroline (Ziezo) Schlitter at their farmhouse in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. He received his education in the rural school of his community. He spent his entire life farming until his retirement several years ago. He was one of the first farmers in this area to obtain a threshing machine and did custom threshing for many years. He served as a director for the Federal Land Bank and for a number of years was a director of the Linton Township school board.

John was married to Mabel Henkes May 10, 1911. Mrs. Schlitter died August 27, 1933. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers. He is survived by 5 daughters, Marie, Helen, Ethel, and Edna of Monona, Delores of Grand Junction, Colorado, three sons, Elmer of McGregor, Donald and Melvin of Monona. One sister, Mrs. Emma Fett, three brothers, Theodore of Postville, Emil and Albert of Monona and 12 grandchildren.

Music was provided by a quartette composed of Mrs. Justus Kammerer, LeRoy Eiffert, and Mr. and Mrs.Harlan Hass. They sang "Beautiful Isle of Somwhere", "Going Down the Valley", and "God Be With You". Mrs. A.W. Eiffert played. Pallbearers were sons and sons-in-law, Donald, Melvin, and Elmer Schlitter, Gerald Kutzbach, Wayne Wilkins, Roy Mount, Raymond Mielke, and Paul Strelow.

NOTE FROM THE TRANSCRIBER: The obituary did not list the married names of the daughters. Marie was Mrs. Roy Mount, Helen was Mrs. Raymond Mielke, Ethel was Mrs. Paul Strelow, Edna was Mrs. Gerald Klotzbach, and Delores was Mrs. Wayne Wilkins.
