DEATH OF A PIONEER

Mrs. Elizabeth Roth died at home at Church, IA, Saturday, Oct. 27, 1923.

On Saturday evening, October 27, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate Bechtel at Church, occurred the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Roth at the advanced age of 83 years.

Elizabeth Roth nee Fischer, was born in Hokenheim, Baden, Germany on December 25, 1840. She came to America in 1854 when a young girl and lived in Freeport, IL until 1861 when she was married to Jacob Roth. In 1861 they moved to Church, Iowa, where she lived up to the time of her death last Saturday. Her husband, Jacob Roth, preceded her in death March 27, 1884.

Seven children live to mourn her departure, Mr. Michael Roth, Mrs. Charles Saewert, Mrs. Henry Marti, Mrs. Lizzie Layer, all of Church, Iowa and Herman J. Roth of Waukon, IA. Also, twenty-one grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren survive.

Mrs. Roth was a member of the Congregational church of which she was a life-long member, Rev. Kegel of Lansing performing the last sad obsequies and the remains were laid tenderly away in the Church cemetery near the spot she had loved and known for so many years.

George Smith of Freeport, IL, Mrs. Mary Becker of Hampton, MN and Mr. & Mrs. John Becker of Cannon Falls, MN, nephews and nieces of Mrs. Roth were in attendance at the funeral.

Death Of a Pioneer Mother.

Mrs. Michael Roth passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate Bechtel of Church, Iowa, on Saturday, Oct. 27, 1923. She had been about the home in her usual way during the day but at 6:30 in the evening quietly fell into the sleep that knows no awakening. Deceased’s maiden name was Miss Elizabeth Fisher, and she was born at Hokenheim, Baden, Germany, Dec. 25, 1840. She came to this country in 1854, residing at Freeport, Ill., where she was untied in marriage with Jacob Roth on March 13, 1860. They moved to Church, Iowa, in 1861, which vicinity had since been her home. Mr. Roth died on March 27, 1884.

Seven children were born to this good woman, namely: Michael, Mrs. Kate Bechtel, Mrs. Chas. Saewert, Mrs. Henry Marti and Mrs. Elizabeth Layer, all of the Church neighborhood, and Herman Roth of route 1, Waukon. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Congregational church at Church, conducted by Rev. Kegel of Lansing, with burial in the cemetery nearby.

Those from a distance who came to pay their last respects to a beloved aunt were George Smith, Freeport, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Becker, Hampton, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. John Becker of Cannon Falls, Minn.
