Josephine B. Hemmah, 100, died at the Hendricks Nursing Home, Hendricks, on Sunday, March 20, 1988, at 10 p.m. funeral services for Josie were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Fron Lutheran Church, rural Roslyn, S.D. Preceding services, Pastor Dale Battleson conducted a prayer service for the relatives. Burial was in the Fron Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation was held at the Johnson Funeral Home in Hendricks on Tuesday, March 22, with David Johnson in charge of the service. Johnson Funeral Home was also in charge at the service in Fron Lutheran Church. Pastor James Carlson gave devotions at the visitation.
Josie was born September 20, 1887 in Waterville, Iowa to Andrew and Elisa (Okre) Pederson.
The family lived south of Hendricks around 1900. She was confirmed in Lake Benton. She married Adolph Hemmah at Fron Lutheran Church on March 30, 1909. They farmed near Hillhead, S.D., until 1918 when they moved to the Andrew Hemmah homestead where they lived until 1966. She moved to Hendricks and lived with her daughter, Agnes Holm. She entered the Hendricks Nursing Home in October of 1983.
At the services Wednesday at Fron Lutheran, Pastor Dale Battleson was in charge. A grandson, Pastor Daniel Holm, Duluth, brought a greeting in behalf of the family and also played a tape where Josie was reading a devotional at age 93. Organist was June Johnson. Martin Hovland sang, "Den Store Kvide Folk" which Josie had requested him to sing 25 years before. Other music was furnished by Gary and Bonnie Stand of Fron and great-grand-children Brad and Brian Randall, Excelsior Springs, MO and Susy Holm, Duluth.
Survivors include, Mrs. Agnes Holm, Hendricks; Mrs. Evart (Edna) Steensland and Mrs. Virgil (Alma) Olson, Rapid City, S.D.; Mrs. Mildred Loseth, Grand Forks, N.D.; and Mrs. Rudy (Thelma) Granquist, Minneapolis; Rueben Hemmah, Roslyn, S.D.; Clarence Naythwausch; Selmer, Webster, S.D.; and James, Whitewood, S.D.; 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Jensen, Roslyn, S.D.; Mrs. Anga Galle, Minneapolis, and Mrs. Stanley Hill (Melva), Fridley.
Her husband preceded her in death. Blessed be the memory of a kind and loving mother and grandmother.
