Elgin Echo, Thursday, 6 December 1894.
A frightful accident occurred on the farm of Henry Leithold near Waukon. Frank Leithold and August Kreiger were there with a steam threshing outfit and a crew of five men, hulling clover, when without a moment's warning the water head blew out. A large fragment struck George Leithold taking off the top of his head and killing him instantly. All the others miraculously escaped, though Mr. Kreiger received some injuries around the head, but came to town immediately to get medical assistance. The water head weighed about 200 pounds, and went aout 150 feet before hitting George. The water tank was blown from the engine and landed under the feeders' table. What caused the explosion is not clearly known, but it is supposed sediment choked up the connection between the water head and the boiler.
