Lucy Augusta Webb, eldest daughter of Henry and Rozilla Webb, was born July 16, 1869, near Postville, Iowa.

On January 17, 1888, she was married to Cassius P. Smith, and they settled on a farm east of Postville where they have made their home continuously since. To this union two children were born, Leighton Earl and Mrs. Esther Chamberlain, both of whom are living in this vicinity. Others who mourn her loss are her husband, five grandchildren, her mother Mrs. Rozilla Webb, four sisters- Mrs. Melissa Owen, Mrs. Ida Staadt, Mrs. Bertha Thias and Mrs.Eva Fay; and one brother, Herman Webb.

Mrs. Smith was of a splendid type of American womanhood, a devout Christian lady, faithful wife and fond mother, a good neighbor and firm friend. She and her husband had toiled for many years on the farm and wrested from the soil a fair share of this world's goods, had but a short time before her demise built a magnificent new farm home and equipped it with every modern convenience and comfort, and had planned on enjoying many happy years together when all of a sudden on Saturday morning September 30th, she was suddenly stricken with paralysis and died a brief time afterwards. The passing of this good woman at so unseemly a time is a blow that the bravest heart can scarcely bear, and the sympathy of all who knew this noble wife and mother goes out to the grief stricken husband and family in their time of great grief.

The funeral was held from the Postville Community church on Tuesday afternoon, October 3rd, conducted by Rev. Wm. E. Butler, pastor of the Methodist church of Waukon, an acquaintance and close friend of the family for some years past. Interment in Postville cemetery.
