Vincent Mathis

Vincent Leo Mathis, 84, of Waukon died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at his home. Funeral services were held Monday, June 3 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Vincent Leo Mathis was born July 20, 1928 in Lansing, the first of four children born to Leo and Frieda (Wendler) Mathis. Vince attended the Prairie country school until seventh grade, then graduated from the Waterville Consolidated School in 1946. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s in Paint Rock.
Vince married Loretta Jean Kelly September 7, 1948 at St. Pius Church, Cherry Mound. They farmed in the Waterville and Thompson Corner areas and then moved to Waukon in December 1959. He worked at the Robert White Cow Pool, and in 1962 bought the Spring Avenue Skelly Station in Waukon. He also owned Vince’s Tap, a tavern on Spring Avenue.
In 1971, Vince began managing Waukon Tire Center, a Goodyear dealership, until his sons, Glen and Paul, took over the business in 1990. He continued to be interested and assisted with the operation until September 2012. During the winters he was very happy plowing snow for many of his faithful clients. For several years Vince volunteered for the Gilbert Ambulance Service. Since 1963, he was a member of the Waukon Fire Department, assuming the Assistant Chief position from 1972 through 1974.
Vince was a long-time member of St. Patrick’s Church in Waukon, as well as the Knights of Columbus. His favorite past time for many years was fishing on the Mississippi River. He also enjoyed playing cards, watching baseball, mowing the grass at Goodyear, and playing Santa Claus for 60 years.
Survivors include his wife, Jean (Kelly) Mathis of Waukon; his children, Elaine (Jim) Bitterman of Overgaard, AZ, and Glen Mathis, Jane Snitker, Marilyn (Jim) Thies, Peggy Mathis, and Paul (Karen) Mathis, all of Waukon; his seven grandchildren, Chris (Annalie) Thies of Chippewa Falls, WI, Beth (Greg) Beltz of Queen Creek, AZ, Brent Bitterman of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Kelly (James) Deeney, Micah (David) Miller, Karli and Tanner Mathis, all from Waukon; nine great-grandchildren, Sydney and Landon Thies, Logan, Dillan and Devan Beltz, Reid and Ava Deeney, and Hailey and Andrew Miller; a brother, Bill (Helen) Mathis of Waukon; and two sisters, Jean (Cy) Corrigan of Decorah and Lorraine Bangs of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jason Berg; and a son-in-law, Mike Snitker.
Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Sommer, Dick Gearhart, Danny Mathis, Cletus Mathis, Billy Roe, Sr., Bill Campbell, and members of the Waukon Fire Department. Casket bearers were his grandchildren, Chris Thies, Beth Beltz, Brent Bitterman, Kelly Deeney, Micah Miller, and Karli and Tanner Mathis.
