Waukon, Ia. - Jane Deeny, six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Deeny, farmers in Makee township, was fatally injured late Tuesday evening when struck by a truck two miles from the Lycurgus school, in which she was a second grade pupil, while on her way to a cousin's home.

The body of the child is at the Martin funeral home, where an inquest is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. According to Sheriff L.J. Bullman and Coroner Dr. C.C. Boyden, the victim was walking from school with her cousin, Billy Sweeney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Sweeney, and intended to go to the Sweeney home for the night. The Sweeney's live six miles northeast of Waukon, on Highway No. 9.

Near the Lycurgus church, the two children were picked up by George Whalen, Waukon, and given a lift to a cross road leading to the Sweeney home. Jane was the first out of the automobile and ran behind the Whalen car, intending to cross the highway. She ran into the path of a truck, driven by Harlan Johnson, Waukon.

Frank Spinner, Lansing, came along at the time and the girl was rushed to Waukon hospital, where it was disclosed she suffered a fractured skull, two broken legs and internal injuries. Her grandfather, H.H. Deeny, Waukon, was in the Spinner car and accompanied his granddaughter to the hospital. The child died shortly after arrival and before her parents reached her bedside.

She was born Feb. 1939 and was the only child.
