Donna Martins

Donna Trinvilla (Rose) Martins, 87, of Postville, Iowa died Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, Iowa.

She was born March 21, 1926 to Walter Frank and Hazel Foy (Goodell) Rose in Merrick County, Clarks, Nebraska. Donna was baptized on January 1, 1936 at Pierce Chapel in Clarks, Nebraska. She attended grade school in Central City, Nebraska and graduated from Independence High School, Independence, Iowa in 1944. After High School, Donna took a one-year secretarial course at NITI in Calmar. She was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone from March of 1944 to January of 1950, two years as an Operator and 4 years as a Chief Operator.

Donna was united in marriage with Delbert John Martins on December 4, 1949 at the First Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa. Three children were born to this union, Alan, Linda and Janice.

Donna was a homemaker and farmwife. She was a member of Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa where she was involved in quilting and many women’s church groups. Upon moving to Postville, Donna joined St. Paul Lutheran Church and continued her membership there.

Donna enjoyed word search puzzles, collecting depression glass, gardening, square dancing, playing cards and traveling to Europe. She was very proud of their Century Farm Award they received. Donna was a wonderful cook and enjoyed cooking for their family gatherings, especially Christmas. Her homemade mac & cheese, homemade pies and cranberry salad were just a few of her families favorites and she made sure, she made every meal a feast.

Donna is survived by her 3 children, Alan (Betty) Martins of Luana, Linda Martins of Oviedo, Florida and Janice Caylor-Martins of North Liberty; 5 grandchildren, Mindy (Duane) Rose, Jason (Jill) Martins, Amy (Chris) Cady, Erin Martins and Christie Caylor; 8 great-grandchildren, Keegan, Alissa, Tayler, Tanner, Olivia, Abby, Cameron and Aidan; her sister, Doris Travis of Independence and several nieces and nephews.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Martins in November of 2000; her parents; her brother, Frank Rose; a sister in infancy and her sister, Helen Randall.

Visitation was held Saturday, June 1, from 9-11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on June 1, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa with Rev. Steve Brackett officianting.

Burial followed at the Marion Lutheran Cemetery, Gunder, Iowa.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, Iowa assisted the family with the arrangements.
