Mrs. James Hand, 63, of Great Oak township passed away in the Emmetsburg hospital Sunday night following a long illness. Funeral services were held in Sacred Heart church at Ayrshire Wednesday forenoon, and the large crowd in attendance reflected the esteem in which the deceased was held. Father McCoy officiated at the requiem mass and delivered a most impressive funeral sermon. The pallbearers were Leo Mulroney, Wm. Hand, Alfred Murray, Melvin Hand, Harold Dowdal and Keyron Eagan. The Foy Funeral home was in charge.

Mrs. Hand, the former Miss Mary Dowdal, was born near Lansing, Ia. She was united in marriage to James Hand, Nov. 23, 1898, at Wexford church near Lansing, and came to Palo Alto county immediately afterward, settling with her husband on their farm in Great Oak township. She had been in ill health for about a year before her death.

She is survived by the following children, all of the Emmetsburg-Ayrshire vicinity: Clem, James, Ambrose, Gerald, Jeanette and Victor Hand. Another son preceded her in death. A brother, Mike Dowdal, lives in Oregon.
