Funeral services were held at the Forest Mills E. U. B. Church on Friday for Stephen S. Smith, 71, who passed away at his farm home near Postville on Thursday, June 1. Rev. Curtis H. Webster officiated. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery in Post township.
Stephen S. Smith, son of Michael and Mary Smith, was born October 19, 1882 at Columbus, Indiana and passed away at his farm home June 1, 1954 at the age of 71 years, 7 months, and 13 days.
In his youth he moved with his parents to several states in the south where they were engaged in farming. He received his early education in the public schools of Kansas and Missouri. As a young man he engaged in farming in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.
On October 23, 1904 he was united in marriage to Alfreda Ewing at Tesca, Oklahoma. They moved to Meade County, Kansas and filed on a homestead where they settled down to farming. In 1912 they moved to Postville and have farmed in Post and Franklin townships until the present time. To this union was born eight children, Leonard, Ivan and Sylbert, Mrs. Louise Christofferson, all of Postville, Cora, Mrs. Earnest Decker of Luana, and Alice, Mrs. Paul Kunkat, of Harmony, Minnesota. Three of his children, George, Milbourne and Goldie, preceded him in death.
He also leaves to mourn his passing four brothers and three sisters, Dr. J. B. Smith of Alva, Oklahoma, J. Kent and Leonard Smith, both of Ada, Oklahoma, M. B. Smith of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, Mrs. O. A. Goodman, Rayville, Missouri, Mrs. R. H. Reed, Jacksonville, Oregon and Mrs. Lena Oliver of Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Three of his brothers preceded him in death. He also has 29 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
