James C. Plein was born Aug 15, 1915 in Caledonia, MN, USA. to Anton and Mary (Deeney) Plein. James attended rural school in Allamakee County, IA. During World War II, he served as a US Army medic in North Africa, Italy and France and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in Cervaro, Italy. He served with the 168th Infantry, 34th Division. July 7, 1948 James and LaVern O'Donnell were married at St. Mary's Lycurgus, IA. He was a retired farmer and factory worker. James was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the American Legion, VFW and Farm Bureau. James, 82, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998 at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Surviving are his wife; five children, Richard of Marion, Ralph and wife Marie of Lansing, Marilyn and husband Lyle Mahoney, and Diane Plein, all of Waukon, and Theresa and husband Neal Wang of La Crosse, WI; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Bernard in 1976; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, George and Chester, and a sister Alice Walsh. Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug 8, at St. Patrick's. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Lycurgus Cemetery. Arrangements were by Hanson Funeral Home. Casket bearers were grandsons, Shane and Matt Mahoney, Justin, Joshua and Tyler Plein and Fred Reinhardt. Honorary bearers were his granddaughters, Teresa Newbauer, Jennifer Reinhardt, Shanon Mahoney, Jessica and Josie Plein and Jackie Mahoney.
