Postville Review, Sat., 10 Nov. 1894.

Fred Kluss Commits Suicide.

Another shock came to Postville last Tuesday morning in the form of a despatch to the effect that Fred J. Kluss had committed suicide at his home in Emmetsburg by hanging. No particulars were given or cause assigned for the rash act. It is probable that it was the result of business depression and perhaps domestic infelicity. Fred made hosts of friends during his residence here who mourn at his sudden death by his own hand. Members of the family went out on Wednesday to attend the obsequies.

Emmetsburg Democrat, Wed., 7 Nov. 1894.

A lenghty article appears in this paper detailing the suicide by hanging of Fred J. Kluss. It refers to the survivors but not by name. They are: His wife and two children, at least one of whom was a boy. An aged mother and a brother who reside near Postville, Iowa, and a sister of Garner, Iowa. It also states that his father and a brother had committed suicide before his own. The father by hanging near Postville, Iowa, when Fred was a mere boy, and the brother by shooting in later years.

The article gives his age as about 33-35 years. He had worked for a merchants store in Postville, Iowa, years prior. At some point he went to Garner, Iowa, where he kept a grocery store. The previous April to his death he came to Emmetsburg, Iowa, where he was engaged in a furniture business with a man named Holman, by the firm name Kluss & Holman.

The Postville Review article supposes his death was due to "business depression and perhaps domestic infelicity", the Emmetsburg Democrat article seems to refute this, stating "their business has been highly satisfactory. They had ample means and always discounted their bills", and "His domestic relations were, to all outward appearences, of the most peaceful character", and "He had an excellent wife, two sweet children to whom he was greatly attached and seemed to enjoy his home surroundings".

Emmetsburg is located in Palo Alto Co, Iowa.
