William J. “Ben” Sweeney, 86, of Lansing, died on Monday, September 24, at Thornton Manor care center, where he had been a resident for the past couple of years.
He was born on November 8, 1892 in Morley to William P. and Mary Trayer Sweeney. He married Alice Williams on November 22, 1912 in Dubuque. She preceded him in death on May 8, 1964.
He was a button cutter and a tavern keeper before retiring. He also operated a boat livery for many years at Lansing.
He is survived by three sons, John, Patrick and Robert, all of Lansing; and a daughter, Mrs. Odean (Gladys) Sandry, also of Lansing; and three sisters, Mrs. Mayme Helle of Lansing, and Mrs. Millie Lorenz and Mrs. Margaret Grode, both of Bradenton, Florida. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond, in 1967 and a daughter who died in infancy.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing, the Rev. Carl Manternach officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were six grandsons, Robert, William, Jerry and James Sandry, Gene and Dennis Sweeney. The Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
