James Valesh, 80, died in his home in New Albin Wednesday, April 2. He was born December 14, 1899 in Odanah, Ashland County, Wisc. to Frank and Barbara (Sears) Valesh, and married to Mildred Quadeon November 2, 1932 in Milwaukee.
Valesh was a car inspector for the Rock Island Railroad for a number of years. In 1927 he started working for the Milwaukee Postal Service, transferring to the New Albin Post Office in 1935, retiring in 1965.
He was a WWI Veteran serving in the Army and Merchant Marines. He was the New Albin Fire Chief for 10 years and a member of the American Legion Post No. 52 at La Crosse, Wisc.
Survivors are his wife, one son, Dr. Keith of Oelwein, one daughter, Mrs. Jane Vonderohe, of Hutchinson, Kansas, six grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Christine Sorg of Rice Lake, Wisc., and Mrs. Barbara O’Neil of Aitkin, Minn.
Services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, New Albin, with the Rev. Richard Waters officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Potter Haugen Funeral Home, Caledonia, was in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers were David Wild, Kent Tanner, Jeffrey Pohlman, Joseph Reburn, Edward Gibbs and Daniel Hartley.
